RESPECT

Those who grew up in tough neighborhoods understand the importance of standing their ground and not allowing others to take advantage of them. However, while most individuals learn how to exercise restraint and pick and choose their battles, some come to believe – often to their detriment – that they must project toughness in every situation.

In this lesson, Jimmy is entirely fixated on making sure no one walks over him, and beats, splashes or punches others at the slightest hint of what he perceives as disrespect. After his release, he gravely injures his opponent on the basketball court after a foul. But his opponent dies from the injury and Jimmy gets a lengthy prison sentence.

Joey, on the other hand, demonstrates the power of self-control by focusing on
his breath and driving force. By staying calm in the face of provocation, Joey avoids fights, tickets, loss of good time, and ultimately securing employment and going back to school.

In short, the purpose of this chapter is the following:

FROM:

TO:

Acting impulsively and aggressively at even the slightest hint of disrespect.

Staying calm by focusing on one’s breath and driving force.
